How to repurpose one blog post into a week of social posts
Published . Takes about 45 minutes by hand, or a few minutes with Illumipost.
You spent hours on an article. Posting the link once and moving on wastes most of that work. The same piece can carry a week of posts if each post makes one point and is written for the network it's on.
This guide is the method we use. It works by hand; at the end we show how Illumipost does the same steps.
The method in six steps
Step 1: Pick the piece and the goal
Choose one article, video or long post that still holds up. Decide what you want readers to do: read the article, reply, or follow you.
Step 2: Pull out five angles
Find one key stat, one contrarian claim, one practical how-to, one quotable line, and one question for your audience. Each becomes a post.
Step 3: Write each angle for each network
Write a LinkedIn version with a strong first line and short paragraphs, an X version within 280 weighted characters, and a Bluesky version within 300 graphemes. Change the wording, not just the length.
Step 4: Place the link deliberately
Put the link in the post that asks readers to click, usually the last one. On X, every post with a link costs more through the API and the link always counts as 23 characters.
Step 5: Spread the posts over a week
Schedule one angle per day in each network's posting slot, so the same audience doesn't see five posts about one article in an hour.
Step 6: Review and schedule
Read every post once more as if you hadn't written the article. Cut anything that only makes sense with the article open, then schedule.
An example
Say the article is about a data catalog that nobody used until the team cut it from 900 tables to 40 and gave each table an owner. Five angles:
- Key stat: "We deleted 860 of our 900 catalog tables. Usage went from weekly to daily."
- Contrarian: "A bigger data catalog is a worse data catalog."
- How-to: "Before adding a table to the catalog, write down the question it answers. No question, no table."
- Quote: "Nobody trusts a table without a name next to it."
- Question: "How many tables in your catalog has anyone opened this quarter?" plus the link to the article.
On LinkedIn, the key-stat post opens with that line, then three short paragraphs on what changed. On X, it's the line alone, inside 280 weighted characters. On Bluesky, it's a slightly longer version, inside 300 graphemes. Use the character counter to check each one, and the thread splitter if you'd rather post the how-to as a thread.
Doing it in Illumipost
Illumipost's Repurpose runs steps 2 to 5 for you. Paste the URL, pick your accounts, and it writes five posts with those angles in your brand voice, one per open posting slot over the following days. They land on your calendar as drafts. Step 6 stays yours: edit, delete what you don't want, and approve the rest.
