How each network counts
- X: 280 weighted characters. Text is normalized (NFC), most Latin characters count 1, emoji and CJK characters count 2, and every URL counts 23.
- Bluesky: 300 graphemes and no more than 3,000 bytes.
- Mastodon: 500 by default, set per server. URLs count 23; remote mentions count only the local part.
- LinkedIn: 3,000 characters for a post.
- Threads: 500 characters.
- Instagram: 2,200-character captions with up to 30 hashtags.
- Facebook Pages: 63,206 characters.
Illumipost's composer uses the same rules for Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn and X, and reads each Mastodon server's real limit when you connect. Need to break a long post up? Use the thread splitter.
Frequently asked questions
Why does X count my post as longer than it looks?
X weighs characters. Most Latin letters, digits and punctuation count 1, while emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count 2, and every link counts 23 no matter how long it is. The limit is 280 weighted characters for accounts without a Premium subscription.
What is a grapheme, and why does Bluesky use it?
A grapheme is what a reader sees as one character. A family emoji like 👨👩👧 is several Unicode code points but one grapheme. Bluesky's 300 limit counts graphemes, and posts must also stay under 3,000 bytes of UTF-8.
Is Mastodon always 500 characters?
No. 500 is the default, but each server sets its own limit. Links always count as 23 characters, and a mention like @name@server counts only the @name part.
How many hashtags can an Instagram caption have?
Up to 30 hashtags in a caption of up to 2,200 characters. This tool counts hashtags for you.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting runs in your browser. Nothing you type leaves this page.
